Mid-Season Report Card: Sunday - Tuesday
Long time no blog, huh... I've been quite busy lately, with all the work at the office (now workin full time) and with the Holidays passing through and making a hole in my wallet, I haven't gotten around to doing my super tv blog. And what a TV season this has been, full of ups and downs, good and bad, and now we have come to almost the middle of this 2005-2006 season of network tv, and here are the BTO results for the first 3 days of the week:
SUNDAY.
Desperate Housewives. ABC. 9 pm.
Oh!, what a year can make, this show has returned from it's good freshman year to give us a huge sophomore slump that it's a wonder that it's still receiving award nominations and more and more viewers each week. This show turned into a joke, litterally. Trying to become more of a comedy than a drama it killed the actual excitement that drove this show's interesting plot, no more mistery, no more drama, no more intrigue means no more watching of this overrated, overstuffed, and over the top "hit".
My Grade: C-
Grey's Anatomy. ABC. 10 pm.
Now this is a show that has flowerished in its sophomore year. Going from a so-so drama about yet another hospital, this show really has character, and I've been one of the few people to notice since the beginning. From the complicated love lives of Christina & Burke, Meredith & the Shepards and Izzie & Alex, to the kindness of George and the straight-forwardness of "the Nazi", this is basically THE ensamble of the year. What I truly like is that it's not necessarily a hospital show, it's really about the characters and their relationships and their lives, which involve working in a hospital, and that is what is truly lacking lately in good dramas.
My Grade: A-
MONDAY
CBS Comedies. CBS. 8 pm
This year's comedy block is quite interesting, and way better than before with the dull Yes, Dear & Still Standing, except for the not-so-good Out of Practice, which I found dull and boring since the start. This year we had the return of The King of Queens to Mondays, and this show is still in prime form even in it's 8th year, though I have to say it's not been the best of the best, but it still gets laughs. The night is followed by the new How I Met Your Mother, which started off with a complete misunderstanding, by 'aunt' the main character meant his friend that his kids will call 'aunt' later on, not their actual 'aunt', but besides that, this has turned into a watchable show, though I still say that the acting is way over the top, the things the characters go through are fun and enjoyable. But the night's best of them all has to be Two and a Half Men, which has stepped it up a notch this year, and Jake the kid has truly THE best lines (the episode about the "masticating" was just plain hillarious!).
My Grades. Queens: B-, Mother: B, Men: A-
Arrested Development. FOX. 8 pm
Oh, I'm gonna miss this, the BEST comedy EVER!!! Although this season started off a little off with the whole Rita story, the episodes without her have been some of the best of the series, even in the last couple of episodes, in which they mock their treatment from the audience and the network. All the injokes within the family, the love of George Michael towards his "probably not really" cousin Maybe, the gayness of Tobias, even the ridiculous storyline with Buster's eaten-by-a-loose-seal hand have been extremely hillarious! I just want justice for this show, whether it's to finish off on FOX, or continue on in Showtime or ABC (hopefully an announcement will come soon on the fate of this show), but just let us the devoted viewers have a good continuation or end for the Bluths.
My Grade: A
Prison Break. FOX. 9 pm
Being the first show to debut this past season was a risk for a new drama, especially for this type of continuity driven show. And even with all the dilussional and non-logical goings ons in this State Penitentiary, you can only just enjoy the ride and can't wait for more. FOX took a huge risk it putting this show on hiatus until March, but I believe it's going to pay off, since the cliffhanger of the "Fall finale" was so extreme and suspenseful that all you can do is tune in and see if the guys will break out or not. (My guess is they won't, but they probably will by season's end).
My Grade: A-
Medium. NBC. 10 pm
Another one of those 'second season' shows, and this one hasn't disappointed, yet. Basically this show has beed the same from last year. Normal mom sees the dead, helps solve crimes for the District Attorney's office, husband is understanding but freaked out by her powers, kids have the same revelations. It's your basic procedural drama, but it's enjoyable because of the family functions and because even though the "Medium" part is considered 'not real', the stories are quite believable.
My Grade: B
TUESDAY
My Name Is Earl. NBC. 9 pm
And this, folks, is what I call good comedy. Finally a great freshman show, a COMEDY that comes to revive the genre with a twist as simple as anything could get. Who would've imagined that a show about some hillbilly rednecks from the main land would be such a hit, well it probably is because it's based on the lives of most of America's citizens! I love how this show makes fun (but not really) of that hick life (His last name is Hickey!), this show exemplifies that characters are what drive a series, because it has all of its characters well defined, and each is hillarious in their own way. Even the guest stars don't come off as tacky ala Will & Grace, they truly do feel like a part of this story, and we can't wait to see them again. Now that it has inhereted the prime Thursday @ 9 time slot, lets hope this show truly revives comedy on the network that defined comedy back in the 90's.
My Grade: A-
The Office. NBC. 9:30 pm
Another 'season two'-er. This show has come into its own in this second season, it is now it's own separate version of the UK hit (which I loved), and I can enjoy each episode as it is. I do have to admit that it is way over the top with the main character, he becomes truly annoying most of the times, and Dwight is even more. But what I'm liking is that this show is being devote to the true story line of the original with the Jim-Pam comings and goings, because at first I missed Tim & Dawn, but now I'm actually rooting for Jim to get the girl. This show is the best when it parodies itself with the documentary crew, the episode in which the cameraman points out the relationship of Dwight and the blonde to Jim & Pam was probably the best.
My Grade: B+
The Amazing Race: Family Edition. CBS. 9 pm
Oh, how we missed the original version of this show. And I didn't realize how much I missed it until I saw the preview of the next season after the finale of this one. I didn't like the idea of a "Family" version since I first heard about it, and it wasn't as I expected, but the families were annoying, especially the Weavers with all their religious crap that was extremely contradicting it was pretty pathetic. The only good thing that came out of this was that the Linz kids won (my pick from the start). But the staying inside the US for most of the season killed it. Here's hoping next season lives up to the high expectations everyone is placing on it.
My Grade: C-
Gilmore Girls. The WB. 8 pm
All I have to say is this: Let Down. This season hasn't been the best for the girls, the separation of Lorelai & Rory was not as fructuous as I'd hope, they dragged it way too long, and those who say that it was worth the wait are completely biased, because we all knew it was coming but just didn't seem to see when. I have to admit that it hasn't sunk as low as in the 4th season (when Rory went off to college), but we'll see how the second half of the season runs to see if this show deserves the praise it sould.
My Grade: B-
