TV Reality of Summer
It is the middle of this summer of tv in 2006, and it is a good one, first of all because we all are taking a well needed rest after a rollercoaster of a season that ended in May, and second of all, because there is good tv to pass the time each night, not all night, but at least an hour or so each night, which gives us well this needed rest before we start the new season (which FOX decided to begin on August 31st with PRISON BREAK).
Although it's mostly 'reality' it's entertaining. This summer we have our Big Brother fix, our Rock Star fix, and our Last Comic Standing Fix, and adding to the mix is newbie Treasure Hunters. All of these shows have been at least good, if not great. Lets start off with the least good:
LAST COMIC STANDING.
NBC, Tuesdays 9 p.m.
After almost a year of absence this stand-up comic contest is back and with some great talent and some of the worst we've seen yet. The finalists consisted of 50% great and 50% awful, good thing most of the good went on to the final 5, bad thing is the voters took out the best female in 4th place (Michele Balan wuz robed!). But this has been a so-so season for the show, mainly because of those non-funny comics that made it into the finals, seeing as how many of the funny acts of the elimination rounds seemed funnier than Joey Gay and that tiny little kicking woman (notice how i don't even remember her name). At the end we were surprised though, to see Ty actually be funny and Chris to be completely un-funny. Here's to hoping either Ty or Josh win this whole shindig.

TREASURE HUNTERS.
NBC, Mondays 9 p.m.
In it's inaugural season, this show has gone for blah to good through the course of its run. It's an interesting idea, teams of 3 looking for clues that lead them to artifacts which at the end will give them one big clue as to where a "treasure of millions" is hidden, all of the clues being related to one another by American history. It has been a wild goose chase from the beginning, with random clues being guessed by teams in a very 'random' way, out of pure dumb luck sometimes, but it definitely has been fun to see the dynamics of the teams, the interaction between themselves and the others. How they've aligned to oust a couple of teams (the annoyingly religious Fogals come to mind), and how, at the end, they realize they're playing only for themselves. We are now up to the final 3 teams and the supposed LIVE finale is around the corner, and we're rooting for the Southies to win it all, especially because the ex-Air Force are the clear frontrunners and the Geniouses are all but that, so, like my moto says, always root for the underdogs!.

BIG BROTHER: ALL STARS
CBS, Sundays-Tuesdays-Thursdays 8 p.m.
Overall, this has been one disappointing season, although it has reinforced my theory from last year that Kaysar is a tool, Janelle is a good competitor but a dumb player and Howie is a 35 year old baby! That pretty much sums up how this season's come about, with an all-star cast returning to the house, everybody is gunning for 'Season 6', who have the most players inside and basically had been ruling the household all month long. Diane said it best, how can Season 6 hate so much on the "friendship" alliance of last year when they are acting the exact same way as them this year! This past week it's all turned good tv with the nominations from Janelle making James jump ship and with Danielle now in power and Kaysar/James nominated, hopefully the house with go against the Kay than the Jay. By the way, Go Danielle!
My Grade: B
ROCKSTAR: SUPERNOVA
CBS, Tuesdays 9 p.m - Wednesdays 8 p.m.
This new edition of the "Rock Star" show that kicked off last year to find the lead singer of INXS, returns to find a lead singer for a new band, formed by former rockers Tommy Lee, Jason Newstead and Gilby Clark. This year they found some awesome talent, from the first performance to the last it's been one hell of a great 'concert' week after week. The eliminations have been questioned a lot (keeping Zayra all these weeks is torture to our ears), but the ones that have left were truly not destined to front Supernova. The frontrunners right now are clearly: Dilana, Magni, Toby, Storm, and Ryan. Although Lukas looked like the obvious winner the first week, he's stumbled more and more each week, especially this past week when he completely butchered Hole's Celebrity Skin, forgetting almost all the words and "singing" with his back to the audience most of the time. I truly wish that Dilana wins this thing, she's been consistent or better every week, but there are those 4 others that can actually take over and it would all be okay.
My Grade: B+
Check back later on for my take on the scripted offerings we have this summer. Mainly from cable tv in the form of The 4400, Deadwood and Entourage.
